Timex is one of the most recognized watch brands in the history of horology. The firm has the reputation for providing the masses with affordable watches that prove tie and time again that they can be relied upon. This is a company that never needed 4 and 5 digit watch offerings to make a name for itself. 2 digit and 3 digit watches are the company’s specialty, and the firm does it better than anyone else. Times is a true king of quartz technology, and had not made a mechanical watch since the early 1980’s, until last year when the company launched the manual winding Time Marlin reissue.
This is a watch that reinvents the famous Timex Marlin watch of the 1960’s. They even went as far as to use the original case size of 34 millimeters. This is quite courageous considering how large watch case trends are these days. This watch fro last year is quite interesting, but the case size and the use of a Chinese watch movement were a bit of a turn off for many Times lovers, so this year things are being changed. This new Marlin Automatic will use a 40 millimeter case diameter, and the movement is made by the world famous Miyota watch movement company of Japan.
Unlike last year’s offering, this new Marlin Automatic is a modern offering not intended to be a throwback to the past. The case is done in a highly polished as well as brushed stainless stel, and as mentioned, measures in at 40 millimeters in diameter. The watch has a thickness of 13 millimeters, and has a 30 meter level of water resistance. I would say the watch is splash proof, and rain proof, but i myself do not swim with a watch unless it has a 100 meter rating. The watch does not have a screw down crown, but it can be wound manually of the owner wished. That is a feature i love about this automatic watch.
The crystal is mineral, and scratch proof, but not sapphire. Sapphire would ruin the price point of this less than $300 timepiece, however Timex always does well to offer solid mineral crystals of reasonable quality to it’s customers. As for the dials, three different variants are available. There is black, there is silver, and there is burgundy. The indices are simple and stick shaped. The hours, minutes, and seconds hands are all silver on the three variants, but this watch also comes in a gold offering that has gold hands in it. A clear and simple minute track spans the perimeter, and the word Timex is branded at the top along with the word Automatic done in smaller text at the bottom. The 3 o’clock has the date window, and it is done in black print with a white background.
Regarding he movement, it was mentioned earlier that a manual winding Chinese movement was used in last year’s Marlin watch. However in an effort to inspire greater confidence in it’s customers, Timex decided to equip this new Marlin Automatic with the proven Miyota 8215 that is not too expensive, is quite reliable, and can be serviced when needed. The movement has 21 jewels, a frequency of 3Hz, and offers a 38 hour power reserve. Miyota is becoming the go to firm for automatic movements being used in affordable automatic watches, and the cmpany is worth keeping an eye on. The strap for this watch is made in Red Wing, Minnesota, USA. The strap is 20 millimeter, and made with real American leather. Each variant of this watch sells for $249.
