2018 was a year of plenty to celebrate in the watch world. One of the celebrations was the 280th anniversary of Jaquet Droz. In honor of that, the firm released a tribute watch named the Grande Seconde. The watch has a futuristic look, with its skeleton style. However the company never does lose sight of what has kept it rolling for nearly 3 centuries.

Elegance, quality, durability, and conservative restraint. Those are the attributes to a Jaquet Droz watch, that horologists care about the most. The yellow gold case sporting the ivory enamel dial is just stunning. The company managed to stay faithful to its iconic watch model created back in 2002 by giving it the figure 8 on its dial. This is a throw back to the days when the company did heavy exporting to China of its pocket watches.

Other ingredients are the smooth case having a large dial opening, and the combo of the large sub-dial for the seconds, with a small dial at 12 o’clock for the hours and minutes. Even though the watch has a 43 millimeter case diameter, it still feels comfortable on the wrist. The watch is intended to pay tribute to Pierre Jaquet Droz, and his early creations. The watch dial is very original, and well executed with a unique layout making the piece easy to recognize.

The number of the watch is printed on the dial using a res serial number that actually helps animate the dial. This tribute watch is destined to be a collectors item, because only 88 pieces were produced. Each watch has its own unique number, and it will be forever easy to identify, and authenticate the pieces. The watch is powered by the double barrel calibre 2663 self winding movement. The movement has a silicon escapement, giving it anti magnetic properties, and resistance to temperature changes.

The watch is an elegant and discreet addition the the Grand Seconde watch collection, and does a wonderful job of representing the company during its 280th anniversary. The watch has a price tag of $22,050, and as i said earlier, had only 88 pieces made. Future auction prices will be interesting to see.
